The Panthers continued to build preseason momentum with an impressive 32-0 victory over the New York Jets on August 17 at Bank of America Stadium. Head Coach Francisco Sather’s squad showcased a balanced offensive attack and a relentless defense that stifled all Jets attempts to get on the scoreboard. With a clean sheet this early in the preseason, the Panthers are setting a tone that could carry forward into the regular season.
From the opening kickoff, Charlotte’s defense set the tone. Jets quarterback Robert Campos struggled to find consistency, completing only 12 of 23 passes for a mere 42 yards and tossing a costly interception late in the third quarter. The Panthers’ defense forced two turnovers early and pressured the Jets relentlessly, racking up five sacks with notable contributions from RDE David Storey, who recorded two himself.
The Panthers' ground game was the clear star of the night. Running backs John Blum and Russell Brown combined for 187 rushing yards and multiple touchdowns. Blum alone rushed for 131 yards and added 35 receiving yards along with two receiving touchdowns. Meanwhile, Brown chipped in 56 yards on the ground and two receiving touchdowns as well, showing versatility that will be key for Sather’s offense this year.
The scoring opened quickly in the first quarter when Russell Brown powered in an 11-yard touchdown run to give Charlotte a 6-0 lead, with Benjamin Delarosa’s extra point making it 7-0. Delarosa added a 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 10-0. The Panthers never looked back, as another Brown rushing touchdown and two Delarosa extra points padded the lead to a commanding 24-0 by halftime.
Preseason rust is still evident with some uncharacteristic errors— Panthers running back John Blum fumbled in the first quarter, and quarterback Robert Campos threw the interception mentioned earlier. Yet, those mistakes did little to slow down Charlotte’s rhythm or confidence.
One notable aspect was the Panthers’ efficiency in limiting penalties, with only two for 20 yards, which helped maintain momentum. The Jets, by contrast, also committed 20 yards in penalties but couldn’t capitalize on their few opportunities.
Special teams also played a quiet but effective role. Punter Armando Adams repeatedly flipped field position with booming punts throughout the second half, keeping the Jets pinned deep and unable to mount a meaningful drive.
Though still early, this dominant performance by the Panthers reaffirms the steady progress under Coach Sather’s leadership. The team’s ground dominance combined with a capable defense bodes well for the upcoming preseason challenges. After a lackluster outing last week, this shutout victory serves as a confidence booster for a roster eager to gel before the season officially kicks off.
Looking ahead, consistency will be key. The Panthers showed the ability to impose their will but must clean up the occasional turnover to turn strong preseason form into regular-season success. For now, Charlotte Post readers can savor a decisive win and an encouraging glimpse at what Coach Francisco Sather’s team might bring to the field this coming October.
